Pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (formerly known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) is pain often experienced in the back and front of the pelvis. Approximately 20% of pregnant woman experience discomfort in these areas.

Symptoms can vary in length and intensity with each woman but seeking advice from a midwife or a specialist woman's health Physiotherapist can help you manage these symptoms.

You may be experiencing:

  • Difficulty walking
  • Pain moving your legs apart
  • Limited hip movements
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pain when standing on one leg in the action of climbing stairs
  • Or getting in/out of the bath

Painful symptoms from any of the above actions would indicate PGP. There is no obvious cause of PGP. Physiotherapy will include a thorough assessment followed by manual therapy, specialist exercises and management advice and a discussion on the provision of equipment use.

If you would like further detailed advice on the assessment and management process, please call the clinic.
